Craving pizza? That doesn't mean you have to order delivery. Instead, get creative and make a few homemade pies for the family! Here are three delicious recipes to try:
Homemade Pizza Dough
Before you start assembling your pies, you must prepare your dough. This simple recipe from Food Network makes two dough balls, so be sure to plan accordingly based on the number of pizzas you're going to make.
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups bread flour
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 envelope instant dry yeast
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 Tbsp. and 2 tsp. olive oil
First, combine the bread flour, sugar, yeast and salt in a standing mixer. As the mixer runs, gradually add the water and 2 tablespoons of oil. Continue mixing until the dough forms a ball. If it's too sticky, add flour. Once the ball is formed, place it on a lightly floured surface and knead until firm.
Grease a large bowl with remaining olive oil. Add the dough, cover the bowl with plastic and place it in a warm area in your kitchen. Let the dough rise until it's double its original size - this should take about 1 hour.
Once the dough has risen, place it on a lightly floured surface and divide it into 2 equal pieces. Cover in plastic wrap and let rest for at least 10 minutes before creating your pizzas.
1. Meat Lover's Pizza
This recipe from Taste of Home magazine is packed with meaty and cheesy goodness.
- 1 dough ball
- 1 Tbsp. olive oil
- 1 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 pound ground beef
- 1/2 tsp. onion powder
- 2/3 cup pizza sauce
- 1 package sliced pepperoni
- 6 ounces Canadian bacon
- 2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
First, heat your oven to 425 degrees and prepare a greased 14-inch pizza pan.
Press and stretch the dough until it covers the pan. Bake dough on its own for 7 to 9 minutes, or until it's lightly browned. Remove from oven, brush crust with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder. Set aside.
Using a large skillet, saute the beef seasoned with onion and garlic powder over medium heat until fully cooked.
Spread the pizza sauce over the cooked dough, leaving an inch untouched for the crust.
Top generously with beef, pepperoni, Canadian bacon and cheese.
Place pizza in the oven and bake until the cheese is melted - this should take 10 to 15 minutes. Enjoy!
2. Spinach and Artichoke Deep-Dish Pizza
The meat lover's pizza might be a hit for your family, but you need an option for the veggie lovers, too! Try this deep-dish recipe from Country Living magazine.
- 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
- 5 ounces baby spinach - chopped coarsely
- 3 cloves garlic - chopped
- 1/2 cup ricotta
- 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese
- 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp. Crushed red pepper flakes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 1/2 Tbsp. cornmeal
- 1 dough ball
- 1 1/2 cups fontina cheese
- 1 14-ounce can artichoke hearts - drained and quartered
- Fresh basil leaves for serving
First, heat your oven to 450 degrees and prepare a 12-inch cast iron skillet with olive oil and cornmeal. Press your dough into the bottom of the skillet, stretching up the sides. Set aside.
In a separate pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add garlic and spinach and cook until wilted - this should take about 4 minutes. Transfer mixture to a plate and set aside.
In a medium bowl, stir ricotta, Parmesan, lemon juice and red pepper flakes until well combined. Transfer mixture to dough, spreading evenly over the surface. Top with spinach, fontina cheese and artichokes.
Place pizza in the oven and bake until the crust is golden brown - this should take about 25 minutes. Remove and let stand for 5 minutes.
Once the pizza's ready, cut it into wedges and serve with basil.
3. Barbeque Chicken Pizza
Whether it's outdoor barbecue season or not, it's easy to bring smoky grilling goodness to your kitchen. Try this barbeque chicken pizza recipe from food blog Sally's Baking Addiction.
- 1 dough ball
- 1/3 cup and 2 Tbsp. barbeque sauce
- 1 cup cooked and sliced chicken breast
- 2/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2/3 cup shredded smoked Gouda cheese
- 1/2 small red onion - thinly sliced
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
First, heat your oven to 475 degrees and grease a pizza pan with olive oil.
Toss 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce with the chicken until evenly coated. Set aside.
Spread remaining barbecue sauce over the surface of the dough, leaving an inch untouched for the crust. Top with chicken, shredded Gouda, mozzarella and onion slices.
Place in the oven and bake for 14 to 16 minutes.
Remove pizza and let cool 10 minutes before slicing. Top with fresh cilantro and serve immediately.
