Did you know that noise-induced hearing loss is 100 percent preventable? Yet an estimated 26 million adults across the U.S. experience this type of hearing loss, according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Use these tips to help you ensure you're doing everything you can to protect your ears from damage inflicted by noise.
1. Listen with caution
Listening to music can be a very therapeutic activity. However, AARP explained that it's essential you're careful as to how you do so. Switch to headphones instead of earphones, as you usually get better sound quality at a lower volume. Follow the 60/60 rule of thumb as well: Keep your sound at 60 percent maximum volume for no more than 60 minutes.
If you find yourself surrounded by loud noises, such as if you live on a noisy street, consider wearing earplugs to protect your ears from potential damage.
2. Exercise for blood flow
Aerobic exercise, such as jogging, walking, swimming and biking, does more than protect you from serious conditions like heart disease and high cholesterol. It can help improve blood flow throughout your ears. The better your blood is able to flow, the better your hearing will be and the less likely you are to experience noise-induced hearing loss.
3. Be careful of how you clean your ears
While it's important to clean excess ear wax from your ears, it's not advisable to use cotton swabs. It's also essential to remember that a little bit of wax in your ears is needed for stopping dust and harmful particles from entering your ear canal. If you stick something too deep inside your ear, it can cause damage to your ear drum and other sensitive organs. Instead, use a damp cloth to gently clean around the canal. If excess ear wax has become a constant issue, see your doctor for professional advice.
