Some fans are just learning that Chris Sullivan wears a fat suit on “This Is Us” ― and not everyone is thrilled about it. The actor, who portrays Toby Damon on the hit NBC show, recently received criticism for donning prosthetics to appear bigger.
But one person who isn’t complaining is Chrissy Metz, who plays Toby’s on-screen fiancée, Kate Pearson. During a visit to “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” on Thursday, Metz said she’s not bothered that Sullivan, 36, isn’t as overweight as he appears on the show. Simply put, she thinks he’s the ideal actor for the role.
“I just feel that we tested a lot of people that were bigger ― and I get it, the authenticity is kind of ruined by that ― but Chris has been heavier, and I think he does understand the plight of being overweight,” Metz, 36, said. “Also, he was the best man for the job, and people wear prosthetics all the time. This just happened to be weight as opposed to, like, a nose or a chin.”
Hey, Sullivan had us fooled, too.
“This Is Us” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
