Caring for the environment goes hand in hand with our mission to champion quality of life for all seniors. And at Sunrise, we are committed to making energy-conscious decisions to better our planet.
Our U.S. communities participate in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR program and many have achieved ENERGY STAR certification in the senior housing category. We’re proud that Sunrise was the first senior living provider to have several buildings certified and continues to lead in this important effort.
If you’re curious about how the certification works, commercial buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR seal of approval use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
To do this, Sunrise communities focus specifically on implementing best practices for efficiency in the areas of lighting and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), as well as laundry and kitchen operations. For example, we make sure to only wash full loads of laundry and utilize a stain removal program to minimize rewashing. We’ve also introduced a comprehensive preventative program to maintain equipment and conserve energy costs, such as smart lawn irrigation systems which connect to the internet and prevent sprinklers from coming on if it just rained.
Our green efforts don’t stop at what goes on the inside – many of our communities have their own outdoor gardens where residents and team members grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. One resident at The Fairfax, VA, even helped get his community certified as a National Wildlife Sanctuary! You can read more about this here. Happy Earth Day!
