Move over books, there’s a new club in town! Podcasts are growing in popularity, which means podcast clubs are too. Who wouldn’t want to get together every week, listen in on your favorite topics and current issues, and then discuss them with a group of friends? Similar to a book club, minus the reading, a podcast club is a great way to stimulate the mind and bring people together.
Sunrise on Connecticut Avenue, in Washington D.C., has hopped on board and is reaping all of the benefits of their weekly podcast club, a part of the community’s Live With Learning programming. The idea came from Alyssa Caroselli, activities and volunteer coordinator at Sunrise on Connecticut Avenue, when their book club began to fizzle out and they were looking for something fresh and fun to fill its place. After organizing a group of interested residents, she explained what a podcast was, and with that, their podcast club had officially begun.
“I am always looking for innovative ways to engage the residents and I knew that podcasts could spark thought provoking discussions and introduce new technology into their lives,” says Alyssa.
Alyssa believes that podcasts have resonated so well with residents because they are reminiscent of a time to when they would listen to the radio as their source of entertainment.
“They are the generation that listened to the radio. I explained that podcasts are basically short radio segments which helped them understand what they are.” The podcast club has been a tremendous addition to the community’s Live With Learning program and recently caught the attention of NPR’s The Big Listen, a podcast about podcasts.
