5 Foods That Boost The Immune System

It's never a convenient time to catch a cold, but when it happens during the summer, it's even worse. Nobody wants to spend their days curled up in bed when they could be outside enjoying the warm sun and fresh air! That's why it's so important to keep your immune system in top shape.

What can you do to keep your immune system healthy? Best Health Canada suggested exercising regularly, washing your hands often and eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet. There are a number of foods that contribute to boosting your immune system more than others!

Here are a few foods that can strengthen your body's defense system:

1. Yogurt
According to Prevention magazine, the probiotics found in yogurt are a healthy bacteria that keep the gut and intestinal tract clear of germs that may lead to disease and illness. Consider eating yogurt for breakfast or a snack every once in a while to reap the germ-fighting benefits! Just make sure you're opting for healthier versions - such as Greek yogurt - and stay away from the ones with added sugars.

2. Shellfish
Oysters, lobsters, crabs and clams are loaded with selenium, an element that helps white blood cells produce proteins that eliminate viruses from the body. Other seafoods, such as salmon, herring and mackerel, are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation in the throat and lungs caused by a cold. Add a delicious fish meal to your menu once a week!

3. Garlic
While garlic has a bad reputation for causing your breath to stink, it's extremely beneficial when it comes to your immune system. According to the information nutrition coach Andrea Moss shared with the Daily Mail, garlic is loaded with allicin, a sulfuric compound that can ward off illness.

"Interestingly, with allicin, it becomes most potent and is basically released when the inside of the garlic clove is exposed to air," she said. "If you get a weird feeling in the back of your throat – like something's coming – that's when you should pop the garlic."

Moss suggested chopping garlic cloves into the size of a pill and swallowing it like a medication. Why? Because you won't get the garlic breath you would've had if you chewed it!

4. Spinach
Superfoods have their name for a reason – they are chock-full of properties that lead to incredible health benefits. Spinach falls within the upper-echelon of this distinction, because it's full of folic acid, vitamin C, and even more potassium than a banana! Consider replacing iceberg lettuce with spinach in your salads. Or, try mixing it in a smoothie for breakfast – the fruits will overpower the spinach flavor, so it won't even taste like you're consuming the vegetable!

5. Honey
According to Canadian Living magazine, honey has been used as a cold remedy for centuries. It's loaded with antioxidants that can kill the bacteria that causes sore throats, ear infections and coughs, and can also speed up the wound healing process, strengthen your digestive system and even clear up your skin!
