5 Low-Impact Exercises For Seniors

Low impact exercise is beneficial in so many ways. It's important to get enough physical activity during the week, but that doesn't mean you have to go to the gym!

As a senior, it's very important to be proactive about your health. That means eating a well-balanced diet and remaining physically active. For individuals living with some sort of strain on your joints and muscles, there are plenty of low-impact options that make exercise an achievable activity.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults aged 65 and older get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderately-intense aerobic activity and two days dedicated to muscle-strengthening exercises. 

Here are a few fun, low-impact options for exercise you should try:

Water aerobics
Swimming itself is a great form of exercise – but have you ever considered water aerobics? It's a great low-impact option that can curb arthritis and joint pain while also increase muscle mass and bone density, according to Livestrong. This form of exercise can also help improve balance, which is excellent for fall prevention. Instead of heading to the gym for your daily workout, head to the pool for a water aerobics class!

Dancing
Dancing the night away isn't only a fun activity – it's a great form of low-impact exercise! Two studies conducted by the University of Missouri found that dance therapy can actually improve seniors gait and balance – making this another great exercise for preventing falls. Don't be shy, just grab a partner and head to a dance class!

Cycling
There's no reason to head to the gym and get on a indoor bike when you can enjoy the wonderful outdoors during the summertime! The National Health Service in England suggests giving cycling a shot. Not only is it a great low-impact option, but it's a beneficial exercise that works the lower body as well as the cardiovascular system. If you've never been on a bike before, be careful – riding the wrong sized bike could lead to injury if you're not careful. Just be cautious and start slow. Increase the length you ride over a gradual period – soon it will become a fun hobby!

Yoga
Yoga is a huge exercise fad right now, and for many health-related reasons! It's great for all ages, but AARP reported that it's especially beneficial for seniors. Here are some of the many benefits that come with performing this low-impact exercise:

  • Strengthens bones
  • Helps you lose and maintain weight
  • Protects joints
  • Boosts your mood

Once you get the go ahead, grab a friend and find a class near you!
